Mark Michels, M.D. is the President of Retina Care Specialists. He is a board certified ophthalmologist who focuses in diseases and surgery of the retina, vitreous, and macula. Dr Michels is responsible for all operations including patient care, research programs, and the business of the practice.
Dr. Michels is also fellowship trained in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery from the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA School of Medicine where he earned the Faculty Award for Research. He is a past president of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, the Palm Beach Ophthalmology Society, and the Florida Association of Retina Experts. He is Co Chairman of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology Industry Council, and currently serves as Alternate for Ophthalmology to the Medicare Carrier Advisory Council for Florida and Board Member to the 20/200 Fellowship in Martin County. Dr Michels has had the honor of receiving the Curtis Benton Young Ophthalmologist of the Year Award, The John Brayton Leadership Award from the Florida Society Of Ophthalmology and the 1st Ophthalmologist of the Year Award from the Palm Beach County Ophthalmology Society.
Dr. Michels practice mission statement is "to provide state of the art vitreoretinal care in an easily understood and compassionate environment where each individual's best interests are always what guide us". Compassion for his patients is key and he spends every working moment supporting this statement. Dr. Michels has also initiated a clinical research program to include 5 national clinical trials and has recruited to the top 5 recruiting centers in the country for 2 of those trials. These research programs enable Dr. Michels to offer cutting-edge treatments and medications to his patients before they are even FDA approved. He has also implemented an electronic records system so that his team of highly trained personnel can concentrate less on the grind of paperwork and more on spending time with the patients, sharing with them exciting new technologies and treatments they might not be able to get anywhere else.
