NEW TECHNOLOGY HELPS DOCTORS DETECT RETINAL DISEASE IN EARLY STAGES TO PREVENT BLINDNESS

Zeiss Cirrus™ HD-OCT Allows For Real Time, Highly Detailed Imaging of the Retina To Track Early Progression of Macular Degeneration

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL- (December 9, 2009) - Doctors at Retina Care Specialists (www.retinacarespecialists.com) are excited to offer a new advanced test to evaluate the health of your eyes and detect retinal disease in its early stages. The Cirrus™HD-OCT performs a simple, yet powerful test which helps doctors identify early signs of eye problems which can lead to irreversible blindness. The test is quick, completely painless, and does not touch the eye.

The new HD Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technology that has transformed imaging of the retina and helps doctors to evaluate the macula with better accuracy. The HD technology allows for real-time, highly detailed imaging which provides us with a more precise examination of the retina. Because of the accuracy of HD OCT, we are guided to have a better understanding of macular diseases and can offer more detailed monitoring of the progression of macular degeneration.

Diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy tend to progress without any symptoms in the early stages. Age is a major risk factor for development of many eye conditions because they typically develop over the course of one's lifetime. That is why it is vital to be tested for these conditions early. The later a disease is discovered, the more difficult it is to treat.

"We are quite fortunate to have received the Cirrus™ HD- OCT through a generous grant to further our research in retinal disease," said Mark Michels, M.D. FACS. HD-OCT offers exquisite three dimensional images of macular anatomy rarely seen before. It uses light to image the structures in the back of the eye to help doctors detect changes in the retina caused by diabetes, macular degeneration and other eye diseases. The information the image provides can affect the doctor's decision about the need for further tests or treatment. Early detection and monitoring are key and can help your doctor make important decisions about your vision.
